Light excess
CLASSIFICATION
Abiotic, light-related issue
ABOUT
Too much light can be harmful, especially to shade-loving plants. The excess light energy is converted to heat and can cause damage to the plant. The plant develops symptoms such as yellow or brown spots on the foliage, yellowing of the leaves, brown crispy leaf edges or tips, and wilting. In serious cases, excess light leads to sunburn or sunscald.
How to treat?
- Biological
Shade the plant using shade net.
Do not remove the sunburned leaves until the risk of sunburn is minimalized. This will protect other parts of the plant from sunburn.
For trees: for better wound healing you may carefully remove any dead bark. Depending on the size of the wound, healing may take many years.
- Disease prevention
For trees: paint the trunk and sun-exposed branches with white color. Make sure that the paint is not toxic to the plant.
For trees: wrap the trunk and sun-exposed branches with white-colored tree wrap strips. Remove the wrap in early spring so that the tree can grow.
