Mechanical damage
mechanical injury
CLASSIFICATION
Abiotic
ABOUT
Mechanical damage occurs when parts of the plant are disrupted by physical action, usually by tools or inappropriate handling. The wound can be an entry point for infectious disease or it can disrupt the water and nutrient transport.
How to treat?
- Biological
If possible remove the damaged parts of the plant. The injury can become an entry point for infectious disease.
For trees: if the bark is damaged, make the edges of the wound clean and leave it exposed to air to dry out.
- Disease prevention
For trees: create protection zones around the tree (e.g. by building a small fence) to avoid injuries to the trunk and roots by gardening equipment. Avoid using heavy equipment around trees.
