Pythium diseases
CLASSIFICATION
Chromista, Peronosporea, Pythiaceae, Pythium
ABOUT
Pythium disease spreads through the soil, affects all parts of the plant, but typically causes root rot and damping-off in small seedlings. Symptoms include stunting, wilting, crown rot, and eventually death of the plant.
How to treat?
- Biological
If possible remove and destroy the infected plant. Burn it, toss it into the garbage, or bury it deeply. Do not compost.
- Chemical
If necessary, apply fungicide containing phosphonate.
If necessary, apply fungicide containing metalaxyl (GHS07: Harmful) (although Pythium may be resistant).
If necessary, apply fungicide containing etridiazole (GHS07: Harmful, GHS08: Health hazard, GHS09: Environmental hazard).
- Disease prevention
Use healthy, certified seeds and seedlings.
Ensure having good soil drainage to avoid overwatering.
Disinfect tools, infected flower pots, and hands to avoid disease transmission.
Do not immediately plant new plants in the place where the infected plant used to be.
