The leaves are alternate, 6–8 inches (15-20 cm) long and 2–3 inches (5-8 cm) wide, with an entire margin and a glossy, dark green color. The undersides of the leaves are a lighter green. It has small yellow-green flowers in the spring and small, dark blue-black berries in the fall. The bark is smooth, light grey in color, and often adorned with small, scattered lenticels. The branchlets are thick and curved, and somewhat whip-like, with reddish-brown buds at the tips.
